Monica Torres Scores Another Win for the Philippines in 2019 SEA Games

The Philippines is this year’s Southeast Asian Games host and despite several controversies regarding the misleading execution and poor management of the Philippines Sports Commission, our Filipino athletes managed to thrive. With several victories under our belt in just the first week of the SEA Games. Some of the sports the Philippines won a medal at sports like basketball, arnis, swimming, gymnastics, dance-sport, and the duathlon.

Training for sporting events, tournaments, and competitions is no joke to the human body. Athletes work ten times as hard to achieve the level of stamina and endurance to be able to compete in such high-ranking competitions. Athletes like our very own 35-year-old Monica Torres who recently just brought home the gold for the country, finishing first at the Subic Bay Boardwalk in Zambales, last December 2.

The 35-year-old speedster was dubbed as the fastest Filipina from her track record for acing the Philippines’ Ironman in 70.3 races for the last 6 years now. Her golden victory in this year’s SEA Games was an impressive feat as she was suffering from a bum stomach a few hours before the competition. “I actually had a stomach problem early this morning… I probably ate something or was just too nervous.” Torres tells Rappler.

Torres’ accomplishments span a vast one, qualifying and winning in several elite categories, some of which include the Powerman Asia Duathlon Championship, Putrajaya ASTC Powerman Middle Distance Asian Championships, and the 2018 Vejle ETU Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon European Championships to name a few prestigious ones.

Monica Torres finished the duathlon in 2:08:44 which is a whole new record to beat for whoever is brave enough to bag the gold next time around. Indeed, Torres proves a whole a lot about motivation, determination, and grit when it comes to performing your best, and this doesn’t just apply to the sport itself, but in life as well. With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics nearing, it’s no question that Torres is one of the deserving few who has the potential and skill to compete.
